SALEM, Ill. — Authorities aren’t offering much of an explanation for why a Centralia man allegedly beat up a pregnant woman and her five year old son Tuesday in Marion County….or exactly where, in Marion County.
However, Charles Crawford, 35, remains jailed this morning in Marion County on a $25,000 bail ($2,500 cash bond), charged with a count of Aggravated Battery of a child under the age of 13, and Aggravated Battery of a pregnant woman.
Media accounts of the Tuesday incident show HOW Crawford is alleged to have harmed the two, but not who they were to him…..whether it was a boyfriend/girlfriend situation, whether he was stalking her, whether he broke in to a random person’s home to beat them up, whatever.
However, accounts have the details of the alleged beating, which involves Crawford throwing the unnamed “mother” to the ground, after which she locked herself in the bathroom (ostensibly of her residence), and Crawford then allegedly broke in and continued beating her. She had her son run to the neighbor’s house to call police, but that was when Crawford is alleged to have attacked the boy, thrown him to the ground, choking him and pinning him to the stairs of the home.
There was no information given of how police finally got to Crawford, but he was formally charged Wednesday with the two counts; if he’s able to post the $2,500, he is to have no contact with the alleged victims. He’s set for a prelim July 22.
