SPRINGFIELD — A vocal proponent of cutting lawmaker salaries says she didn’t know she would be getting a raise on July 1 when she voted in favor of the state’s spending plan.
State Rep. Sue Scherer, D-Decatur, said she thought initial drafts of the state budget included language calling for members of the General Assembly to continue taking 12 furlough days per year.
But because of a 2013 lawsuit, legislative leaders stripped the demand for furloughs out of the budget, saying the practice — in place for the past five years — was unconstitutional.
“I did not know this when I voted for the budget,” Scherer said.
