How did politicians vote on the first budget bill based on a permanent income tax increase?
Illinois House members have started voting on a series of budget bills that assume the 5 percent income tax rate set to drop to 3.75 percent in January is, instead, increased permanently at the higher rate.
The Chicago Tribune called out several representatives who told them the tax rate should drop. Several of those people voted for the school budget bill based on higher tax revenue that has not yet been voted on.
From the Tribune:
“I would vote to repeal the tax increase. I would not support extending the tax increase.”
— State Rep. Michelle Mussman, D-Schaumburg
“We made a promise to the taxpayers and we should keep to that promise. It was a temporary increase and it should be kept that way.”
— State Rep. Fred Crespo, D-Hoffman Estates
“I do not support extending the increase.”
— State Rep. Kelly Burke, D-Evergreen Park
“I support the phased down increase as was promised.”
— State Rep. Deborah Conroy, D-Elmhurst
“I support repealing the tax increase because I believe local families cannot wait any longer for tax relief.”
— State Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Aurora
“I think voters ought to hold their elected officials accountable. When they passed this tax increase, they promised it would expire.”
— State Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet
“I do believe the tax should be truly temporary. We should say what we mean and mean what we say.”
— State Rep. Fran Hurley, D-Chicago
“The tax should expire as planned.”
— State Rep. Frank Mautino, D-Spring Valley
