WILLIAMS MAKES IT A WASH; EDWARDS CITIZENS PISSED

David Williams. Oh wait. That's a weenie. Oh wait...

EDWARDS CO.—Nothing like the predictability of public officials.

I’d even wager that if we hadn’t put the post up about Steve Smith and the trash bags this morning, the whole thing would right now be languishing in Wayne County State’s Attorney David Williams’ office, just like Nate McGaha’s DUI and the Silas Fulkerson incident dating back to early January.

But here’s the follow-up, per a statement from Williams issued not too long ago (to whom it is directed is unclear), this according to the same radio station that refused earlier to name the “suspect,” WFIW:

I have reviewed your report and attachment regarding the alleged theft of trash bags from the Edwards County Courthouse. State’s Attorney Michael Valentine asked that I be appointed special prosecutor in the matter and the order was signed by the Honorable David Frankland. Valentine faxed me the materials on March 21, 2012. My review of the matter indicates to me that no criminal charges are justified. Whether or not the county clerk’s husband had actual authority to remove and utilize the trash bags – he appears to have been cloaked with some apparent authority to act on behalf of the county clerk especially as it pertains to election procedures – most notably voting machines. Further, his acts appear not to be outside the apparent authority vested in him by the county clerk. I see no way to convince a trier of fact that the alleged culprit was guilty of any crime. De minimis non curat lex.

The insufferably pompous and smug Williams, who hasn’t won any significant kind of court case since he came to be in office a couple of  years ago after the resignation of Kevin Kakac (he has to bow out of the big ones because he went from public pretender to prosecutor, and ended up on the other side of his former clients), just HAD to issue the Latin phrase at the end which, when translated, reads “The law does not concern itself with trifles.” That’s a laugh. That’s all “the law” DOES concern itself with in Wayne, as none of their cops can be believed and the county has to seat grand juries in order to get felony charges against anyone…and most of the time, the very serious ones end up as misdemeanors.

But it gets worse. Again citing the radio station (you know…the one that refused to run the names):

The matter surfaced after County Clerk Mary Beth Smith sent an e-mail to fellow officeholders asking them who may have taken trash bags from the courthouse. Surveillance video of the courthouse hallways revealed it was allegedly Mrs. Smith’s husband, Steve Smith.   Again – the matter has been laid to rest.

The citizenry of Edwards, who has known about this for DAYS before even WE knew it (and we found out Monday morning 03.19..12….which kind of shoots the “election” theory in the ass), are fuming. We’ve been getting a host of emails and messages to this effect. This could get very unpleasant…not that it isn’t already.

So….just so we have this straight:

  • Ol Steve was “involved” in….voting issues? Election procedures? Ballot disposal? We’re not sure.
  • He was “authorized” to take trash bags, as video surveillance clearly showed he had, apparently acting in the capacity of an agent of the county clerk: his wife, Mary Beth.
  • Yet MaryBeth was missing some trash bags and sent out an email to everybody on her list, asking where the trash bags were…and
  • She sure didn’t see em at their nice Wanboro Lake home, elsewise she’d have known where they went, so…where’d they go? making us wonder
  • Was Steve actually acting under any kind of standing authority if all of the above were the case??

Is anyone else scratching their head over this? Because I’m losing what little hair I have left, conducting this activity.

To me, this is all ABOUT scratching: It appears to have devolved quickly into cats-in-a-litterbox mode long about the time I was picking up my meds at the new pharmacy in Albion, right after I hit the “publish” button on this post. Between 10:21 and 12:15, everybody had an opportunity to scramble together a nice story and Williams had a chance to read about being a “do-nothing” state’s attorney…so he justified his do-nothingness by firing off what he probably thought was an eloquent yet somewhat snarky press release. Really, David? Gee….we thought maybe you’d cite a conflict. Like, you know, your wife worked with the dog groomer who went to the same hairdresser that Steve’s cousin’s momma went to for years. It’s gotten you out of so many responsibilities in the past, you know. We didn’t really think you’d just blow it right off like that. You KNOW you wouldn’t have if the person who tucked the trash bags UNDER HIS ARM UNDER HIS COAT as he was leaving the courthouse had been living, say, in the trailer park in Albion, down by the tracks.

Believe me when I tell you this isn’t over. Edwards County is about to find out just how OVER it ISN’T. Because I for one am sick of this. There is a different standard for certain people than for others in smalltown southern Illinois; it makes us look bad in the eyes of people from places “not here”. And here, it’s become so commonplace that it’s just “accepted” now….but “accepted” doesn’t make it RIGHT. And Wayne County…you had the chance to get rid of Williams in November 2010. Why you didn’t take it is one of those mysteries of the ages. You should be ashamed. And you wonder why you have so much unpunished—nay, unCAUGHT—crime.

If it didn’t appear too conspiracy theory-ish, I’d think this was a political ploy to ensure Valentine’s loss at the ballot box this fall to Les Smith (relation? who knows?)…if Valentine doesn’t have the churches behind him (and the churches just loooove that Hope Center), he can’t prevail, no matter how awesome of a job he’s doing. But that’s just….conspiracy theoristish now….isn’t it?
