CAIRO, Ill.—The man whom authorities believe is responsible for the bank robbery in Cairo yesterday has been identified.
Officials have confirmed that the man arrested in Charleston, Missouri, yesterday (May 15) is James Watts, 29, of Cairo. Watts is the man who was taken into custody after a chase across state lines ended behind the water plant in Charleston. The chase ensued after there was a reported armed bank robbery in Cairo, with multiple people injured. As it turned out, three were stabbed, but not all of the victims were associated with the bank, according to officials; instead they were stabbed in other locations. Two people have died of their injuries.
Watts was taken into custody by FBI officials and transported to the Williamson County Detention Center at about 2 a.m. this morning. Alexander County charges have not been filed; it’s possible that federal charges will be filed as opposed to state, as bank robberies, even those on a small, local level, can go federal.
