U.S. DISTRICT COURT, BENTON—On May 6, 2014, a federal grand jury returned a one-count indictment charging Travis D. Bailey, 30, of Carbondale, Illinois, with Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, Stephen R. Wigginton, announced today.
On May 13, 2014, Bailey made his initial appearance in federal court in Benton. Bailey is currently being held without bond pending a July 14, 2014, jury trial.
The offense occurred on March 7, 2014, in Carbondale, Jackson County. The firearm offense carries a penalty of up to 10 years in federal prison, to be followed by 3 years of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000. Under the law, a defendant is presumed to be innocent of a charge until proved guilty beyond a reasonable doubt to the satisfaction of a jury. The ongoing investigation is being conducted by the Carbondale Police Department. The Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office also assisted in the investigation.
The case is assigned to Assistant United States Attorney Amanda A. Robertson for prosecution.
