EAST ST. LOUIS, ILL. — Federal prosecutors say they will seek a 25-year sentence for a man who admitted shooting a southwestern Illinois business owner while stealing $42 during a robbery.
Thirty-three-year-old Phillip Smith pleaded guilty Wednesday to three felony counts related to last November’s holdup at the Ferguson Television and Satellite shop in Caseyville.
Authorities say the East St. Louis man fired at least nine shots at the 63-year-old shop owner, who sustained 12 entry and exit wounds from the bullets. She survived.
