SALINE CO.— A special meeting of the Saline County Board to address issues pertaining to a hotly debated proposed contract with Peabody Coal company and the subsequent closing of Rocky Branch Road was called to order this evening at approximately 5:30 p.m.

The meeting began with Chairman Carey Harbison taking the floor for a moment to tell the visitors his feelings on the matter.

Harbison then called board member Roger Craig to the floor to present the motions for closure of Rocky Branch road, as well as a motion for a proposed contract with Peabody.

Craig then went on to make the motion to accept Resolution R14-04 for the vacating and relocating a portion of County Highway 32, Rocky Branch Road.

All board members voted yes with the exception of board member Jeff Murrie.

There were two abstentions: one from board member Joe Jackson and one from board member Bob Oglesby, both citing a conflict of interest.

Sources tell Disclosure that one man owned stock in Peabody while the other had a family member who could be affected if the proposals were passed.

At that point Rocky Branch resident Jennifer Dumbris tried to talk to the board but was called out of order.

Craig then went on to make the motion to accept the agreement between Peabody coal and the Saline County Board for mining operations. The motion carried with the same votes totals.

Board member Karla Carrigan made a motion to adjourn the meeting, which carried but not without objections being shouted from Rocky Branch residents

As board members left the meeting room, Dumbris and Judy Kellen, both of Rocky Branch were demanding to be heard, and several other Rocky Branch residents began holding a banner in objection.

This issue has been one of the most highly charged in the history of the area and many Rocky Branch residents have vowed to continue the fight.
