After three years of investigation, prosecutors filed two conspiracy charges against accused “shadow campaign” financier Jeffrey E. Thompson on Monday.
The charges, filed in a 10-page criminal information, for the first time detail the suspected scope of Mr. Thompson’s heavy involvement in both local and federal elections from 2006 through March 2012.
Mr. Thompson is accused of making illegal donations worth more than $1.46 million to candidates running for seats on the D.C. Council and for mayor — including giving $668,000 in unreported contributions to Mayor Vincent C. Gray’s 2010 campaign for mayor.
Mr. Gray is not named in the court documents, but is instead referred to as a political candidate for mayor, but four of his former campaign aides and associates have already pleaded guilty to charges stemming from the shadow campaign.
Mr. Thompson is also accused of giving $883,750 in illegal campaign contributions to a litany of candidates for federal office.
