LAWRENCE CO., Ill.—Illinois State Police have released details on the fatal collision that occurred yesterday (Friday, January 24, 2014) that claimed the life of a Flat Rock woman.
The accident took place on Lawrence County Road 1800 East a quarter-mile north of County Road 1700 North, six miles east of the community of Birds in rural Lawrence County.
ISP advised that Nancy Hunter, 57, of Flat Rock, was driving southbound on CR 1800 E in a 2007 Honda Odyssey van, while Richard Churchwell, 63, of Lawrenceville, was northbound on the same road in a 1993 GMC truck. With Churchwell Hunter (corrected from earlier) was a four-year-old passenger, Ryan Mendenhall, who was in a carseat. Neither Hunter nor Churchwell, ISP said, were wearing seat belts.
Hunter’s vehicle crossed the center line and collided head-on with Churchwell’s vehicle.
Churchwell and Mendenhall were both injured, and were transported from the scene to St. Mary’s Hospital in Evansville. Hunter was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lawrence County Sheriff Russell Adams advised Disclosure yesterday evening that ISP had worked the accident, and that his department had not, hence the delay in reporting.
