Police have launched a homicide investigation after officers found a grisly scene in an apartment in the Northwest Side’s Belmont Gardens neighborhood early Christmas morning.
Police were called to the 2500 block of North Kildare Avenue about 2:05 a.m. by someone who reported a homicide, Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said.
Officers found a decapitated body in a basement apartment there, police said. The body was that of a 41-year-old adult male, police said.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office confirmed the death this morning but listed the man’s name and age as unknown.
An 18-year-old was taken into custody outside the building “without incident,” Greer said. Police also recovered a knife, she said.
The relationship between the 18-year-old and the man found dead was not immediately clear.
Charges against the 18-year-old are pending. Area North detectives are investigating.
