Goreville, IL - A crash in Goreville this morning, November 29, has left one injured and another deceased.
According to ISP District 22, the accident occurred at 9:42AM when a 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis left the roadway after the driver fell asleep at the wheel. The driver was an elderly male, who had a family member as his passenger.
The car was heading southbound on IL Route 37, and went off the right side of the roadway a little over 100 feet south of the intersection with South Fly Street in Goreville. The car then went down a small embankment and struck a concrete culvert which goes underneath the roadway. The car’s rear end spun to the left after hitting the culvert.
Officials at the scene noted that no skid marks or signs of attempting to stop the car were present on the road or in the grass along the embankment.
The elderly driver was taken by helicopter to St. Francis Medical Center with two broken wrists, as well as possible internal injuries. His condition at the time is unknown.
The passenger in the vehicle was also flown from the scene to Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion, where she was pronounced deceased by a Emergency Room Doctor.
The driver and passenger’s identity are not being released by ISP, but notification of the fatality was made at the scene of the crash.
