WHITE CO.—At the hearing this morning in White County for a convicted murderer’s girlfriend, a jury trial date was set.

Whether things will get to that point, however, remain to be seen.

Candice Brown, 31, remains the girlfriend and babymomma of Danny K. Coston, 37, who two weeks ago Monday entered into an agreement with the court to have a quick stipulated bench trial and was subsequently found guilty of killing two young White County people, Jessica Evans, 17, and Jacob C. Wheeler, 22. The two were on a camping trip in rural White County when Coston happened upon their riverside camp and, behaving belligerently, asked them for a ride, then shot Wheeler, sexually assaulted Evans, and shot her as well.

Brown’s part in the whole thing, as Coston’s cohabitor, was to have allegedly lied to police following questioning of Coston on August 31, 2012, telling them allegedly fabricated information about his whereabouts on the night in question, August 24, 2012. She was formally charged with Obstruction of Justice regarding those statements.

Brown was in court this morning, Wednesday, September 4, a year after Coston made his first appearance to a packed courtroom and the multiple counts of murder and assault were read against him.

This morning, nothing so dramatic occurred, and a jury trial date was set for Brown: January 21, 2014. A final pretrial conference is scheduled for January 8, with no court settings between now and then…unless, of course, she enters a plea, thus pre-empting the January setting.

Coston himself goes for formal sentencing later this month (Sept. 17), but he’s already gotten a “cap” of sorts set in his DOC term: no less than 50 years, per the convictions he was given during the bench trial in front of Judge Tom Foster August 19.

We’ll have the full coverage of the post-trial in the upcoming print edition, which hits the stands next Tuesday and Wednesday, September 10 and 11. And if you can’t wait for the print version—or, if we sell out, as we have in many south counties locations of the current edition—you can always get the whole paper right here on the e-Edition with an online membership; just follow the prompts at this link to start your membership today.
