WAYNE CO.—An incident in rural Wayne City yesterday afternoon prompted Illinois State Police response after it resulted in injuries.

car-pedestrian_accident_320_wktvAccording to a report from ISP, the incident happened shortly before 3 p.m. in a driveway at a rural location and involved a driver leaving the residence and another man coming after occupants in the car.

Gary W. Weaver, 66, of Dix, was attempting to leave the driveway of a residence located at 783 Wayne County Road (CR) 300N, Wayne City, in a 2011 Toyota Yaris, when a pedestrian at the residence, Carl A. Atteberry, 34, also of Wayne City, became agitated at the occupants of the car and approached the vehicle.

After first reportedly striking the front of the Toyota with a liquor bottle, Atteberry entered the path of the vehicle. Weaver was unable to avoid striking Atteberry. Atteberry was thrown into a ditch on the south side of Wayne CR 300N and subsequently struck again by the Toyota.

Atteberry was transported to Fairfield Memorial Hospital by the Wayne City Ambulance Service for treatment of major injuries sustained in the crash. A passenger in the Toyota, Mervin T. Martin, 66, also of Wayne City, also received minor injuries in the crash, but declined medical assistance.

All occupants of the vehicle were wearing their seat belt at the time of the crash. The Illinois State Police was assisted at the crash scene by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department and the Wayne City Fire Department.

The crash remains under investigation by Illinois State; no charges have yet been filed.

Above is the official ISP report on the incident.

Now contrast that with what one of our local radio stations have on it:

34-year-old Carl A. Atteberry of Fairfield was critically injured Friday afternoon after being run over by a van in southern Wayne County.  According to Wayne County Sheriff’s officials, Atteberry is accused of driving a woman on a four-wheeler down an oil lease road north of Interstate 64 where he attempted to rape her.  Police said the woman broke free and ran to a nearby county road screaming for help.  A van occupied by three men stopped to help and took the woman inside the vehicle.  Investigators said at that point, Atteberry started beating on the van with a whiskey bottle to get to the alleged victim, and when Atteberry got in front of the van, he was run down.  Atteberry was taken to Fairfield Memorial Hospital and later airlifted to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville where his condition was listed as critical but stable.

Wouldn’t you have liked to have known what ISP was leaving out? We would have.

More as we get it.
