WABASH CO.—An alleged home invasion with battery occurred early this morning and resulted in a suspect being corralled in a nearby cornfield, according to Wabash County authorities.
Wabash County Sheriff Joe Keeling reports that at approximately 1:12 a.m. this morning (Friday, August 30, 2013), the sheriff’s office received a 911 call from a rural residence north of Mt. Carmel.
The caller stated that someone had entered their home and allegedly assaulted and battered the caller with some type of club while the caller was asleep; the alleged invader then fled on foot.
Wabash County sheriff’s deputies arrived, assisted by Mt. Carmel police and their K9 unit, and after a brief search, they located Eric McKinney, 33, of Mt. Carmel, in a nearby cornfield, thanks to the efforts of the K9.
McKinney was taken into custody and toted off to the county jail in Mt. Carmel, on preliminary charges of Home Invasion.
The victim (which wasn’t identified as male or female in the sheriff’s report) was treated at the scene by Wabash General Ambulance Service personnel.
McKinney remains jailed pending setting of bail; the situation is still under investigation.
