CLAY CO., Ill. - A Clay City man arrested last October for a serious sex abuse case has been sentenced in Clay County Circuit Court.
Richard Grabowski, 28, is the guy in question.
Grabowski was arrested on October 22, 2018, after an incident of sex abuse was reported to authorities to have occurred on the 18th there in Clay City.
Grabowski, whose ID shows him previously residing in Tamaroa in Perry County, has been in the custody of Clay County since his arrest, unable to post bond ($20,000 cash).
He was charged with a single Class 2 felony count of Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse of a victim under the age of 13, the details of which have never been made available.
Grabowski's case was delayed a bit as he pulled out the increasingly-fashionable "fitness" issue early on, meaning that he claimed that there was something mentally wrong with him that would preclude a fair trial and that he needed to be examined by an expert before the court proceeded any further. This stunt was popularized by Glen Ramey after he was charged in the rape and death of Sabrina Stauffenberg in 2016, and it didn't work for Ramey any more than it worked for Grabowski.
In early January, Grabowski (who should really think about changing his name...) was found fit to stand trial and, rather than do that, he opted to enter a plea to the charge as it was filed (likely because the evidence was solid, but we don't know because details were never made available.)
After entering that plea on Jan. 23, 7esterday (Monday, March 25), Grabowski was sentenced to five years in IDOC, which of course means he'll only be there a couple of years. IDOC logs show that he's scheduled for release in April of 2021.
Of note is that the usual court costs (which vary from county to county) have not been assessed against Grabowski in the form of fines and fees, as the court has already determined that any such amount would be "uncollectible."
