Mt. Carmel police have excruciatingly-busy first full week of March

MT. CARMEL, Ill. - It was a busy first full week of March for Mt. Carmel Police, according to this report compiled from pressers from last week and early this week.

On Mar. 4, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Marek Nowak, 50 of Des Plaines, Illinois for DUI after he was stopped in the area of Seventh and Market streets. Police reported the driver had an alcoholic beverage smell coming from his person. Nowak was arrested and transported to the Wabash County Jail where he was charged with driving while revoked, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, and DUI. Nowak was held pending the posting of bond.

On Mar. 6, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Darick L. Loving, 43 of Mt. Carmel, on a failure to appear warrant out of Wabash County. Police knew of the warrant and observed him walking out of Family Dollar on Walnut Street. Loving was transported to the Wabash County Jail and held pending the posting of $200.00.

On Mar. 7, Mt. Carmel Police arrested a couple after they were found to be in possession of methamphetamine during a traffic stop. Police stopped a 2012 Chevrolet being operated by Taylor R. Sharp, 23 of Bellmont. Police reported that Sharp had committed a traffic violation in the area of Third and Bellmont streets. During the traffic stop police identified a passenger as Jason L. Cox, 40 of Mt. Carmel. Earlier in the week, Mt. Carmel Police were able to obtain an arrest warrant for Cox charging him with delivery of methamphetamine. Cox is accused of selling methamphetamine to a confidential source working for the Mt. Carmel Police Department. Cox was arrested and during the arrest police located approximately 9 grams of methamphetamine in a sock he was wearing. Police reported finding two plastic bags of suspected methamphetamine in a purse belonging to Sharp. Both Sharp and Cox were transported to the Wabash County Jail. A 10-month-old child was taken into protective custody and turned over to a family member. Cox is charged with delivery of methamphetamine and possession of methamphetamine. Sharp is charged with possession of methamphetamine and was cited for disobeying a traffic control device and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Both were held pending the setting and posting of bond.

Also on the 8th, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Marcella F. Huggins, 56, after she called the police to report her medication stolen. Police arrived on scene and took Huggins’ report in regards to her medicine being stolen. However, it is alleged that her medicine was never taken. Huggins is suspected of selling her narcotics then reporting them stolen. It was reported that she told the officers she sold the pills for $80.00. Huggins was arrested and transported to the Wabash County Jail where she was held pending the setting of bond. She is charged with Disorderly Conduct for filing a false police report.

Marvin Westlake

At 4:04 p.m. that same day, Deputy Zach Lienemann conducted a traffic stop on a blue 1996 Jeep Cherokee for running the extended stop arm of North Gibson School Corporation Bus 2 on State Road 64 near County Road 175 North. Sgt. Bruce Vanoven, who was riding the bus, observed the violation and radioed to Deputy Lienemann who was a few cars behind the bus in traffic. Upon approaching the vehicle Deputy Lienemann identified the driver as Marvin Westlake, 70 of Mount Carmel. Mr. Westlake was taken into custody and transported to the Gibson County Jail where he was charged with Reckless Driving-Disregarding a School Bus Stop Arm. He was held pending posting of a $1100 bond.

The 8th was a very busy day: Mt. Carmel Police arrested Jessilynn P. Lutz, 22 of Mt. Carmel, after she was stopped by Mt. Carmel Police. Lutz was placed under arrest after officers were notified she was wanted on a Wabash County failure to appear warrant. Lutz was transported to the Wabash County Jail where she was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Lutz was then served the $200 cash bond warrant.

Mt. Carmel Police arrested Gregory A. Davis, 43 of Mt. Carmel, on the 8th after he was stopped in the 200 block of Walnut Street. During the traffic stop it was discovered that Davis was driving on a suspended driver’s license. Davis was arrested and transported to the Wabash County Jail where he was cited for driving while license is suspended.

And finally on the 8th, Mt. Carmel police arrested Gary L. Wright, 57 of Mt. Carmel, after he was in the 900 block of West Ninth Street. During the traffic stop it was discovered the Wright was operating a motor vehicle on a suspended driver’s license. A search of Wright resulted in officers locating a plastic bag of a suspected methamphetamine. Wright was arrested and transported to the Wabash County Jail where he was charged with possession of methamphetamine and driving while license suspended. 

On the 9th, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Juan E. Downing, 68 of Mt. Carmel, after he was stopped by Mt. Carmel Police. During the traffic stop it was discovered that Downing never has obtained a driver’s license. Downing was arrested and charged with no valid driver’s license, expired registration, and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Downing was transported to the Wabash County Jail and held pending the posting of bond.

And then on that same day, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Dustin K. Winkles, 28 of St. Francisville, after he was stopped by Mt. Carmel Police. During the traffic stop it was discovered that Winkles was wanted on a Lawrence County failure to appear warrant. Winkles was arrested and transported to the Wabash County Jail where he was held pending the posting of $225.00 cash bond.
