MARION CO., Ill. - A rear-end collision yesterday in front of Raccoon School in Salem sent a woman from Hoffman to Salem Township Hospital with serious injuries, and the collision injured her two kids as well.
The two juveniles were not seriously injured, fortunately, but the teen who is alleged to have caused the collision has been cited with just a minor traffic ticket.
Illinois State Police said the two-vehicle crash occurred yesterday afternoon (Saturday, January 5) at 3:09 p.m.
ISP reports that Amanda Peebles, 38 of Hoffman, was driving a red 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee at that time, with the two juveniles, a 9-year-old and a 7-year-old (gender not indicated), both also from Hoffman, with her as passengers. Peebles was stopped on State Route 161 eastbound at Raccoon School, waiting to turn left into the school drive.
Justice I. Hynes, 18, of Centralia, driving a 2006 blue BMW 7 Series, was traveling the 161 eastbound approaching the Jeep from the rear. ISP said he failed to notice the Jeep was stopped in the roadway, and struck it in the rear end.
Peebles was transported to Salem Township Hospital for treatment of what ISP termed serious injuries. The children were also taken to Salem Township Hospital for treatment of what ISP termed non-life-threatening injuries. Apparently Hynes was uninjured.
He was subsequently cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid a Crash.
