GALLATIN CO., Ill. - The man behind the wheel during a DUI crash in Gallatin County that cost a motorcyclist his leg has been sentenced to Illinois Department of Corrections.
Gallatin County State's Attorney Doug Dyhrkopp said that on Monday of this week (October 22), Daniel Mills, of Stonefort, was sentenced on one count of Class 4 felony Aggravated Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol-Great Bodily Harm.
Mills pleaded guilty to striking Robert Wade Finney in rural Gallatin County June 6, 2018, causing major injuries to Finney (Finney lost a leg at the knee, as the subsequent collision nliterally tore it off), while Mills was under the influence of alcohol. Mills pleaded guilty and a sentencing hearing was held in front of Hon. Judge Thomas Foster. Mills was sentenced to 10 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections at 85 percent and was also ordered to serve one year of mandatory supervised release (or parole) and pay restitution and court costs in the amount of $17,092.
Mills' intoxication was the contributing factor in the crash.
The case was investigated by the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Department, which was assisted by the Shawneetown Police Department. The case was prosecuted by the Gallatin County State’s Attorney.
