ARRESTS MADE IN DRIVE-BY SHOOTING

CARBONDALE—No, it’s not one of the many in Harrisburg, unfortunately…but the ‘burg could use this example from Carbondale as a primer in how to get some of their crims under control.

And the intriguing thing about it is: there was only one shot fired in the incident, yet five people are being held in connection with it, and charged with the maximum they can be under the law.

The incident happened early Sunday morning, July 14, 2013, at 1:50 a.m. Carbondale officers on foot patrol (another thing that would be great for Harrisburg to have) heard a single gunshot. They investigated and found that it occurred in a vehicle in the 600 block of East Grand Avenue, and that it was their suspicion one of the people in the car has fired a weapon at a pedestrian on that street…then left the scene, but was stopped by police.

Upon further investigation, the police learned that this alleged incident was supposedly part of an “ongoing feud” between the alleged victim (whose name was wisely not released) and one Andre T. Bailey, 27, of Tamms. What Bailey was doing up from Tamms has not been explained in any subsequent press releases. However, what was explained in subsequent reports by law enforcement were the arrests and charges of everyone around Bailey that night:

Desmine Schauf

Anthony V. Bailey (relationship to Andre unclear), 24, also of Tamms, was arrested and charged with Assault and Disorderly Conduct; Jeremy C. Clark, 30, of Carbondale, was charged with Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon and Aggravated Fleeing to Elude; Nashika Bradsfield, 25, of Carbondale, and Desmine Schauf, 25, also of Carbondale, were each charged with Aggravated Battery and Mob Action; and Anthony Bailey himself was charged with Attempted Murder, Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm and Unlawful Use of a Weapon.

While the alleged victim wasn’t injured in the shooting, police say they so charged Bailey because he had allegedly attempted to get into a fight with the intended victim.

The other Bailey, as well as Clark, were charged due to their very presence in the car with Andre.

Bradsfield and Schauf were alleged to have beat up a person at the scene of the shooting, this person believed to have somehow been involved in the incident, but reports weren’t clear on that involvement.

Records indicate that Andre Bailey was out that night after he was able to post bond; the others remain incarcerated in the Jackson County Detention Center in Murphysboro pending posting of bond as well as subsequent court dates.

While it seems like a cut-and-dried situation, it did involve a little investigation on the part of the police, something it seems is lacking in other communities in the area, such as Harrisburg with all their drive-bys, break-ins and car burglaries, and in Creal Springs, where it seems the investigation in to the death of Trevor Martin has stalled completely. However, we’ll have more info on much of it in the upcoming issue of Disclosure, which you can read from the comfort of your computer right here at the e-Edition, available beginning Monday night, July 22; and the print version, available beginning Tuesday, July 23.
