OLNEY – Reports of a local crim holding up McDonald’s in Olney weren’t exactly that, but at least the “holding up” part was accurate.
Most of Olney was buzzing on the evening of June 11 when right around 11 p.m., AT McDonalds on 701 E. Main, Seth T. Whalen, 29, allegedly attempted to rob one Adam Rowark.
Court documents show that Whalen approached Rowark, pulled a knife from his pocket, partially opened it, and while opening it, demanded Rowark’s wallet.
Court documents show that this alleged action resulted in a charge of Attempted Armed Robbery, a Class 1 felony.
Court documents don’t make it clear how authorities were notified, but they were, and responded quickly to the scene, giving chase to Whalen.
They caught him, but he didn’t go down without a fight: Subsequent court files show that Whalen engaged in a bit of alleged battery upon Olney’s finest.
For his efforts, Whalen was rewarded with three Class 2 felony Aggravated Battery of a Peace Officer charges: The first for allegedly swinging his left leg kicking and using his knee to strike Olney PD Sgt. Holly Hamilton in the leg; the second, swinging that busy left leg kicking and using his knee to strike Olney Officer Aaron Easton in the leg area and breaking Eastin’s watch; and the third, wrapping both of his now-very-busy legs around the right foot of Richland County Deputy Tim Moore and trying to cling to him which caused Moore to scrape his right wrist on the concrete while he was attempting to secure Whalen, causing Moore’s wrist to bleed.
This obvious ruckus took place at North Street and Whittle Avenue, several blocks away from McD’s, not a bad piece for a homeless guy to run (which is what Whalen is now claiming he is: Homeless).
Despite how he appears in his mugshot, Whalen was treated better than he allegedly treated the cops: He was nicely stuffed into a waiting cruiser and toted off to Richland County lockup, where he was given a place to relieve his homelessness, even if it was behind bars.
Whalen is a hardened crim from way back, coming to Disclosure’s attention in 2008 when he was just a youngster at age 19 and had a place to stay other than a jail cell. He’s been racking up all kinds of convictions and charges since his first public arrest and conviction, that of Aggravated Battery with a Weapon (a knife) and has pretty much stayed in trouble since that time.
What prompted him to become homeless is unknown, unless, with all the OPs filed against him, he’s worn out his welcome for anyone foolish enough to get involved with him.
Whalen has had a couple of hearings since that time, and is next set for another pretrial conference on August 9…meaning he’s at least going to fatten up on a bit of non-nutritious jail food before he gets back out in public again.
