CLAY CO.—After getting resoundingly growled at by Ang when we were in the middle of Harrisburg Walmart last Friday evening (07.05.13), the Clay County Sheriff’s Department has issued a press release—of sorts—about the accident that reportedly knocked out power to a large portion of the area around and west of Flora.
Here’s the release, exactly like it came to us, with no corrections:
July 15, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a motor vehicle
accident at 5:26 p.m. east of the intersection of Old Hwy 50 and Ironwood
Road east of Xenia. A 16 year old female from Xenia, was travelling east
on Old U.S. Route 50, reached for an item in the car, ran off the rodway
and struck the power pole. The juvenile refused treatment. No citations
issued.

Upon learning Friday evening that power was out on that side of Flora, Ang called the sheriff’s department, where Deputy Berg (Burg? who knows…not that it matters, since apparently, whomever is issuing the releases can’t spell anyway) advised that he couldn’t give any information…but only AFTER he played word games with her about whether his department was working an accident, whether an accident had knocked out power, whether any other agency was working it (she’d called Flora, and they’d said county was on it), and etc. It was very frustrating…and NOT like that department, who has, up until recently, been very helpful when an incident such as this occurred.
Berg offered to make sure we got a release on it. Ang advised him that people without power were interested NOW in learning what had happened, not later. He advised that there would be someone available Monday. Ang asked if the department anticipated that there would be no crime, wrecks, fires, explosions, shootouts, etc, on the weekend, and if crime only occurred Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Berg was a smartass at that point.
Ang very wisely advised him that HE’d just become the story, not the accident…and so here it is.
We’re hearing there’s some kind of problem going on within the sheriff’s department, but the exact nature of it is unknown. That’s a sad deal, as Sheriff Jim Sulsberger has been one of the best sheriffs in the area to work with. Too bad his deputies have become such asses.
Maybe that can still be rectified. We’ll let you know.
