CARMI, Ill. - Apparently Carmi has become the new place to get busted if you're walking around with unserved, out-of-county warrants.
This is what happened over the weekend when a 28-year-old Odin man was arrested at Pundrake's, the popular gas and convenience store on Fifth Street.
Joshua M. White, of the 100 block of Laury Street in that Marion County town, was arrested apparently without incident at the business. He was served warrants out of pretty much every county except his home one and the one he was found in (White): Jasper, Hamilton and Richland counties all had warrants for his arrest. The Hamilton County warrant was the oldest, dating back to 2008; Jasper's, 2012, both of those being felony warrants; and the Richland County warrant is one from this year.
White remained behind bars as of this afternoon.
Two wrecks were reported as the weekend got underway, both happening Friday, June 29.
The first occurred at 10:40 a.m. on Main Street at Haley Drive, when Eloise Gaines, 83, was turning right from Haley onto Main. She said she looked and didn't see anyone coming, then pulled out, striking another vehicle being driven by Marlene J. Hoffman, 79, in the eastbound lane. Both ladies are from Carmi.
Gaines' vehicle sustained damage to the front bumper/fender area on the driver's side, Hoffman's to the passenger's side front fender and front door area. Both vehicles were able to be driven from the scene. It's unclear whether Gaines was cited with Failure to Yield Right of Way, but that infraction was noted on police documents.
The other accident occurred later that same day, at 2:36 p.m. on Seventh Street at Sycamore.
Mary E. Browning, 73, of Carmi, was backing out of her driveway onto Seventh Street when she backed into the rear bumper of a vehicle parked on the east side of Seventh Street facing north, that unoccupied vehicle being owned by Shirley K. Brach, 67 of Cisne in Wayne County. Both vehicles sustained minor damage to the rear bumpers; no citations were issued.
