FAYETTE CO., Ill. - A man from Canada was crushed between two big rigs on Interstate 70 last night when one truck sideswiped another, where the Canadian driver was standing outside his truck.
The accident took place at 8:50 p.m. last night, Wednesday, June 13, according to Illinois State Police in District 12, and had the interstate shut down for several hours while the scene was worked.
Preliminary reports indicate that a white 2008 Kenworth truck-tractor with a white 2007 Reitnour flatbed trailer was parked on the right shoulder of I-70 eastbound near milepost 55.5 in Fayette County.
The driver of this rig, Peter F. Peters, 46, of Elmira in Ontario, Canada, was standing outside of the vehicle on the driver's side near the middle of the trailer when an unknown truck-tractor with a white box semi trailer sideswiped the Kenworth.
ISP said Peters was "pinched" between both units and was fatally injured.
After sideswiping the Kenworth, the other truck-tractor continued traveling eastbound on I-70 and left the scene of the crash.
